Grand Designs Show 2014

A few pictures of our stand at the Grand Designs show back in early October.  A four day event this year which frankly did our legs no favours, especially when someone forgot to bring some stools!

Almost 2 months on from the show we have already had two orders from enquiries gathered on our stand and we have already signed up for next year.  We were considering the Grand Designs London show but we weren’t too sure about the impact 9 consecutive days of standing would have on our poor legs.

Commercial Spiral Staircase – Wickham, Hampshire.

Commercial Spiral Staircase – Wickham, Hampshire

The majority of our customers are ‘end-user’ domestic clients involved with self builds or refurbishments, but we do supply a number of larger spiral staircases suitable for commercial use.  These are often for schools,  shops, offices and restaurants.  Like most fixtures within a commercial setting there are some stringent regulations to adhere with and spirals are no different.  These rules relate to the clear tread width, inner – centre and outer going measurement, riser height, and the location and thickness of the handrail.  They can get fairly complex so give us a call on 01794 522444 or email .

This particular flight was supplied as a semi commercial spiral staircase with a 800mm clear tread width.  It was supplied as part of a stunning fitout of an old barn into a number of self contained office units. The spiral staircase was constructed with solid oak treads on a steel tray, an external steel stringer and horizontal steel bars forming the balustrade.  We supplied a large platform at the top of the spiral which tied into the steel beams and it was topped with the same flooring material as the upper floor. As with all commercial spiral staircases a centre column handrail was included, snaking around the centre column.

This commercial spiral staircase was supplied in a primed finish, ready for on site painting.  Whilst we often powder-coat the product, a primed structure is popular as it removes the significance of damage to the paintwork during fitting.

Our client was extremely happy with the end result and this commercial spiral staircase can be viewed by appointment.

Timber Staircase Surrey – Music Room

A bespoke floating timber staircase supplied to a customer in Surrey.

Our client was adding a music room alongside a garage in an extension to their property in Limpsfield, Surrey and needed a straight flight stair to access the new media room above.  As with most extensions like this, space is at a premium and customers are generally not too keen on the stair taking up too much space –  even if it is a feature staircase.  On this project we initially discussed a spiral stair and an alternating stair with paddle steps before focusing on a quarter turn, and finally a straight flight.  A compliant staircase (spiral or straight) often takes up more room upstairs and downstairs than people realise.   The straight flight drawn was designed to have 2m headroom (minimum permitted) and a 42 degree pitch (maximum permitted) – therefore taking up the least amount of space whilst satisfying the building control officer.

The model itself was a floating, open WF staircase constructed in solid oak and brushed stainless steel.  This model has no stringer on the exposed side of the flight with treads cantilevering from the wall stringer.  These floating treads are held and supported by stainless steel spindles which are screwed directly into the extra deep handrail.  The handrail passes the imposed load on the tread to the newels top and bottom of the WF timber staircase.

The WF timber staircase can be supplied in any hardwood – with beech, oak, maple, birch and walnut the most popular, and can be created as a straight flight, quarter or half turn flight.

Have a look at the projects below to see different examples of the WF stair featured here as ‘Timber Staircase Surrey’ –

Bespoke Staircase – Kingston

‘Bespoke Staircase – Kingston’ was a recently completed model 500 staircase supplied to a private client.
What made this model fairly unique is that the customer embedded the zig zag wall stringer into the wall to create a cantilevered effect with the treads coming straight out of the wall!
Our client cut a notch in the existing wall, positioned and bolted the steel stringer in place and carefully plastered up to each tread. To avoid any of the plaster cracking, a small piece of ply was placed on the wall side of the tread before plastering. Once the plastering had been completed, this piece of ply was removed and the small gap was then filled with white silicon to allow a small amount of movement.
This bespoke staircase consisted of 60mm solid oak treads supported by a zig zag stainless steel stringer on the outer side. Above this were some brushed stainless steel newel posts which supported 10mm toughened glass panels. These were topped with a 50mm solid oak handrail. It was a total transformation from the original staircase and it opened up the entire hallway.
The model 500 bespoke staircase is a very versatile system available in a variety of timber, staircase configurations and finishes. Have a look at the links below to see some previous examples of this bespoke staircase.

External Spiral Staircase

External Spiral Staircase – New Office Development – Enfield.

Ordered by a large national construction firm, a double flight commercial spiral staircase was supplied to a new office development in Enfield. This spiral fire escape was constructed with a 900mm clear tread width to meet the regulations and included a wheelchair refuge area which is commonly required on a commercial spiral staircase acting as a fire escape. It provides a clear 1.2m square area outside which is clear of the door to stair thoroughfare.
This external spiral staircase also came complete with a canopy which sat neatly on top of the extended centre column which provided shelter for users.
Given the height and weight of the product, a crane and genie was required to get the upper platform and canopy in place – as the photos demonstrate.
At Complete Stair Systems we tend to focus on our stunning bespoke internal spiral staircases but never forget – we do offer a ‘complete’ range. Whilst not designed to be an aesthetical master piece our external spiral staircases are an extremely popular and practical solution.
Each model is a bespoke creation ensuring the entry and exit point suit the layout of the property, the platform is suitable for the application and the clear tread width meets the building regulation requirements. Full drawings are prepared of each project which are submitted for discussion for each job.
We offer this type of bespoke system for both commercial and domestic clients. What is extremely popular presently in domestic settings is enlarging the platform of the spiral staircase to create a balcony, allowing our clients to sit out, enjoy a glass of wine and soak up the surroundings. Homebuilding & Renovating Review

The Homebuilding & Renovating Show finished last Sunday and some of us have just had the first two days off in 12!!  We returned with aching limbs but with a sack load of enquiries.

As it was a last minute decision to exhibit, our stand was a little smaller than we would have liked but it was great to be there and have a presence at one of the largest selfbuild shows in the UK.

32000 people filtered through the three halls at the NEC over the four days and we were kept constantly busy.  Those with refurbishments in planning or on site flocked to the stand.

The last week has been spent sifting through the enquiries and allocating the ‘to be done’ quotations to the sales team.

Next show will be again be at the NEC – Grand Designs Live in October.

Ed Butler – Cycling Sensation

Regardless of the weather, each morning Ed Butler leaves his car in the garage, shuns the option of public transport and  cycles the 12 miles to work.   This has always impressed everyone in the office who frankly aren’t fully functional first thing in the morning.

For the past few months Ed has been training for an 70 mile race in South Africa, a race he completed a few Sundays ago.  After battles with ferocious headwinds and horrific inclines, he completed the course in a tad over 4 hours!!

Ed – we would all like to congratulate you on your achievement.  Well done!!

Bespoke Staircase London

A follow up to an earlier post of our ‘Bespoke Staircase London’ project.  The project finished in February and we now have some pictures of the final result – and they look truly stunning!!

The project consisted of 4 separate flights of bespoke staircases from our Model 500 range.  Each model had 100mm thick chunky oak treads which were treated to match the colour of the flooring used throughout and frameless glass balustrade.

Please click here for a google sketch up 3-D view of the three quarter turn flights on this project with which you can pivot, zoom and fly around the staircases.

These staircases were supplied to a construction firm but we also supply direct to the end user.  If you are looking for something similar, a wow factor modern staircase for your new build or refurbishment – please get in touch for a quotation.

You can email us plans at or call the office directly on 01794 522444.

The Model 500 staircase is a bespoke model and is made to suit the opening and the individuals specification.  Whilst the structure is the same for each model, each staircase supplied is unique with the type of balustrade, tread type, colour and configuration all chosen by the client.  Use the links below to see some other variations of the model 500 staircase.
