July 2022 – Office Spiral Staircase Stafford

Whilst our main client base tends to be homeowners building or renovating their property, we frequently get involved with  contractors working on commercial projects.

This spiral staircase was supplied to a fit-out contractor building a new office unit for their client in Stafford.  Their main reception are required access to a couple of offices located on a mezzanine deck and a spiral staircase was specified.  This was mainly because a fully compliant conventional staircase would have taken up too much space and dominated the entrance area.  A spiral is perfect in these situations because regardless of height it’s footprint remains the same – the diameter of the spiral.   It was classed as a semi commercial setting so a category C spiral staircase was required.  This meant a centre column handrail and a 800mm clear tread width between handrails resulting in a 2000mm overall diameter.  To keep the spiral towards the corner of the reception area we produced a larger platform level with the mezzanine pushing the spiral back toward the corner.   The floor to floor height was quite high at 3300mm so 17 risers were chosen.

Treads and platform were chequer plate and the balustrade was formed with a number of horizontal bars with a steel handrail above.  In a domestic setting these horizontal bars are rarely permitted due the risk of climbing but they generally accepted in a commercial environment.   Although children were not present, the building inspector insisted on reducing the gap between the treads to less than 100mm.  Keeping this unobtrusive as possible we added 8mm toughened glass mini risers to the back of each tread.

The client wanted an industrial look and feel  and although the spiral was internal, the spiral staircase was suppled fully galvanised finish
