December 2021 – Genius Spiral Staircase Devon

With the end of the year upon us, we squeeze in our last project of the month entry for the year.

Our customer was renovating a holiday let property in the pretty village of North Molton, nestled in the rolling hills of North Devon.

We were contacted in the early stages of the building project with the request for a modern spiral staircase in oak.  After providing a quotation for several models in our range our client settled on the GENIUS spiral range which sits between the off the shelf kits and the custom made models.  The spiral had to meet building regulations as a category A (secondary domestic) so a 1500mm diameter was selected to ensure the clear tread width was over 600mm.  As we were involved at an early stage we were able to tell our client to create a 1600mm opening for his 1500mm diameter spiral.  He decided to go with a circular stairwell the maximise the floor space upstairs.

Oak treads and handrail were chosen to match the flooring being installed downstairs and our client opted for the chrome effect steelwork.

Riser bars were added to ensure the gap between the treads remained less than 100mm for building regulations and just over 3m of matching landing balustrade was supplied to protect the stairwell opening upstairs.

The Genius spiral staircase is one of our most popular designs.  As it is classed as a ‘premium’ kit it has many more options than a standard kit and offers great value when compared with a custom made model.  The Genius has a choice of timbers, choice of platforms, choice of balustrade types and many steelwork and timber finishes to chose from.
