November 2024 – London Mews Staircase

Our client recently acquired a property nestled in a quaint mews between the BT Tower and Regents Park in Marylebone, London. The interior was set for a complete overhaul, transforming it into a sleek, modern space with updated fixtures and fittings. The property’s design featured an unconventional layout with four split-level floors extending from the ground to the roof.

To connect three of these levels, new staircases were necessary. This included a small straight flight connecting the first and second levels, and a compact spiral staircase linking the second and third levels. Additionally, landing balustrades were needed to safeguard the edges of the first and second levels. The client desired matching staircases, leading us to consider the Model 500 straight flight and the Model 71 spiral, both crafted from timber, glass, and steel and produced in the same factory.

The straight flight staircase was constructed with five risers, flanked by frameless glass balustrades, and featured 50mm beech treads stained black, complemented by black powder-coated steelwork. This same black finish was applied to a steel apron we provided to support the middle level’s landing balustrade. The spiral staircase, measuring 1800mm in diameter, required a lengthy central column extension to anchor the floor below due to its placement away from the starting floor’s edge. It was built with black-stained beech treads and included a platform level with the middle and upper floors. While the spiral staircase itself did not need a balustrade due to the adjacent curved wall, we installed a stainless steel central column handrail for added safety, matching the handrails on the straight flight and landing balustrades.

Eight months post-renovation, the property hit the market and was promptly sold, undoubtedly attributed to the elegant staircases!!
