Project of the Month – October 2025
Floating Staircase Berkhamsted
In Berkhamsted, a popular commuter market town in Hertfordshire, a client was remodeling their house. The project involved gutting the interior, adding another floor to the house, and installing a new double-flight staircase.
The refurbishment’s overall theme was modern, open, and light, featuring minimalist fixtures and furnishings. To complement this style, the client chose the floating WF staircase. This unique design is supported solely by a wall stringer on one side and a specially designed handrail on the open side. The treads cantilever from the wall, supported by steel spindles, resulting in a smooth, open, floating-style staircase that enhances light flow and transparency.
Oak was selected for the steps and handrail, with the wall stringer painted white to blend seamlessly with the wall. Brushed stainless steel spindles extended from the steps to the handrail, continuing around the openings on the first and second floors.
When designing a double-flight staircase, maintaining proper headroom between the flights is crucial. Early involvement in the project allowed us to draft the staircase design well in advance, ensuring the builders positioned joists correctly.
The risers appear open in the images; however, mini oak riser pieces were provided with the staircase.
The clients were delighted with the overall aesthetic, with the staircase serving as a striking centerpiece in the new home.
The WF staircase is a popular, more cost-effective alternative to a true cantilevered staircase. It does not require a solid block wall or embedded steelwork and can be installed adjacent to a timber stud wall.
