External spiral staircase.

One of our most popular stairs we supply are our external spiral staircases. These models are supplied to both commercial and domestic clients. Being fully bespoke they can be manufactured in diameters up to 3m and can span 5 or 6 floors. The standard finish is galvanised with either a non slip perforated or chequer plate tread. Very popular is the addition of an enlarged top platform at upper floor level which can incorporate a balcony for those balmy summer evenings.

Although often supplied for functional reasons as opposed to aesthetic, every now and again a project comes along which our external spiral stairs can add be the focal point and really add character to a build.

This particular project was actually an internal application which is becoming more and more common with our ‘external spiral staircases’. A flight spanning 2 floors was required for this stunning new build in Fareham, Hampshire. The construction company, architect and end client visited our showroom to bottom out the specification of the spiral staircase which was to be located in a concrete stairwell topped with a glass box to allow passage of light. To continue the flow of light we decided upon a grating tread design with open risers and opted for a square spindles and flat bar handrail to reflect the ‘block’ structure of the property.

Although ‘merely’ a galvanised you can see the stunning addition this external spiral stair makes internally.

We offer an economical range of fully bespoke external spiral staircase suitable for both domestic and commercial usage. Fully functional models, made to measure – whether it is providing a fire escape to an office block or a quick access route to the upper floor of an annex – which is the purpose of this particular spiral.

Supplied direct to the customer, this model provided a means of escape to the upper level of a newly created annex. With a much smaller footprint than a conventional staircase, this snug little spiral fitted perfected in place and didn’t encroach too much into the garden area. Being a bespoke model we were able to increase the size of the upper platform slightly to push to centre column and spiral a little further away from the building to keep a storage space underneath.

For all these stairs full AUTOCAD drawings are prepared and submitted for approval before manufacture. This spiral was 1200mm diameter and consisted of non slip perforated steel treads with 10mm diameter vertical steel spindles. It was supplied fully galvanised for protection against the elements.

Within this range we can also powder coat each spiral after galvanising to any colour you wish. We can also incorporate a much larger platform creating a balcony area for those long summer nights!!

Supplied earlier this year, some great pictures of an external spiral staircase provided for a customer in Southampton.
Like all our larger external spirals, this one was custom made for the customer to their specific floor to floor height and requested diameter.
They also required a small balcony area at the top so we enlarged the top platform.
This particular model was made to suit a 3800mm floor to floor height which was met with 20 risers. The 1800mm diameter provided an 800mm clear tread width to comply with category B of the British standards. The top platform was 2000 x 2000mm and the deck and all the treads were constructed using our non slip perforated steel treads. All steelwork was fully galvanised.
